House and Senate Passes Funding Bill- Biden to Sign to Avoid Shutdown- December 21, 2024
By BoredomMD Total Views : 88 Daily Views : 8The House of Representatives and the Senate passed the funding bill to avoid a shutdown and now it goes to Biden for signing. The farming and emergency aid were included and the debt ceiling increase that Trump wanted was not included. The only representatives that voted against it were 32 GOP members (and the house is controlled by GOP) and it passed only because of Democrats.
While Representative Nick Langworth voted against the bill initially because of Trump pressure, he did vote for the latest vote to avoid a shutdown.
Trump and Elon Musk—both wealthy—are proving they are bullies…if you don’t vote against funding the government, then they will not support you in getting re-elected and since Langworthy apparently doesn’t care about avoiding a government shutdown, good luck to all of us. We don’t know about you, but we are sick of using the government budget every few months to promote political positions.
Keep in mind that Trump forced the GOP to tank the border immigration bill in March and now the bi-partisan agreement for funding the government now. Why – because he wants to get rid of the debt ceiling so he can have tax cuts for corporations and run up USA’s debt.
Millions of federal workers will not get paid–2 million federal workers and 2 million military workers. Social Security checks would still go out but federal agencies would stop all actions deemed non-essential. Nearly 60% of federal workers are in the Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security. Social Security will not be affected nor the postal service.
Firearm permits and passports could see delays and some museums like the Smithsonian and the DC zoo have had to close in the past. The US Post Service would not be affected. Previously a shutdown reduces economic growth by .2% every week it lasts. TSA screeners and air traffic controllers at airports have to show up but won’t get paid. Of course, the President and members of Congress will continue to get paid. Source
So if their bulling results in a partial government shutdown, here is what will be affected:
- Ironically, $231 Million for enhancements to Secret Service for protection of presidential candidates. Plus $47 million to District of Columbia for security associated with inauguration activities.
- $100 Billion in emergency aid to help states and local communities recover from hurricanes Helene and Milton and other natural disasters
- Farm bill extension of 2018 farm bill and an additional $10 billion in economic assistance for farmers
- Extension of expiring Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and the National Flood Insurance program’s authorization
- Homeland security extension including lapsing authorities to operate interagency task forces to combat drug trafficking and counter drone threats at special events and large public gatherings.
- Another $8 billion will go to help rebuild and repair highways and bridges in more than 40 states and territories. And some $12 billion would go toward helping communities recover through block grants administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. About $2.2 billion would go to low-interest loans for businesses, nonprofits and homeowners trying to rebuild after a disaster.
- The bill also includes provisions focused on countering China, including expanding on a Biden executive order that seeks to restrict investments into countries that pose a national security threat to the United States. Blocking China’s high-tech ambitions is one of the few issues that enjoys broad support in Washington from both Republicans and Democrats.
- The legislation also provides full federal funding to rebuild Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed when struck by a cargo ship that reported losing power just before the crash. Federal taxpayers will be reimbursed through proceeds from insurance payments and litigation.
