Roycroft Film Society- The Innocents– October 12, 2025 at 4pm at the Roycroft Power House at 39 South Grove St, East Aurora. $8 admission.

With a chill in the air, the Roycroft Campus Film Society has decided to bring some chills of our own with a screening of the gothic psychological thriller The Innocents. Based on the Henry James story The Turn of the Screw with a screenplay adapted by William Archibald and Truman Capote. Produced and directed by Jack Clayton.

The story follows a young Miss Giddens (played brilliantly by Deborah Kerr) who takes her first governess job for two children in a large Victorian mansion. The wealthy bachelor uncle has little interest in raising his niece and nephew who were orphaned and left in his care as infants. Miss Giddens is instantly taken with the young boy and girl, but soon grows disturbed by the children’s occasional odd behaviors. She begins to see what she believes are ghosts and suspects the children’s actions may be the result of supernatural powers.

The film would be praised for it’s eerie sound effects, moody, stylized lighting and its editing and cross dissolves, which enables the audience to “feel what the governess feels.”
