Trump indicated he wouldn’t sign any Congressional bills- the affordable housing and surveillance acts unless the SAVE ACT was passed.
Sen. Thom Tills, Rep-NC- says the SAVE ACT is dead because there is not enough time to change elections laws before the midterms—even if the Senate Republican s got the 60 vote which is unlikely. Supposedly the SAVE Act was to provide proof of citizenship, however, federal law already states that is illegal for non- US citizens to register or vote in federal elections-punishable by five years in prison. And, dozens of lawsuits claiming fraud proved to have no basis.
Additionally, a federal judge ruled that Trump can not use the USPS postal service to act as an election gatekeeper deciding who and would not they would deliver ballots to.
Also, the Supreme Court on July 3 ruled in a Mississippi case that allowed mail in ballots to be counted if they are postmarked on or before Election day and received by election officials within five days of the polls closing. Mail-in balloting appears to be saved in general and neither party have gained an advantage from mail in voting. Keep in mind that Trump voted by mail in the last election in which he voted which was in Florida.
And, in Boston a federal court declared unlawful Trumps desire to have Homeland Security compile a list of US citizens and direct the US Postal Service to restrict mail in voting. This is in addition to the above Supreme Court Ruling.
Trump still can’t internalize that he lost the popular vote to Biden by 7 MILLION votes and to Clinton by 3 MILLION votes (and only got in because of electoral college).
Then there is Trump’s desire to have ICE agents at polling places which is illegal under federal and state laws. DHS has stated that there are no plans to have ICE officers at voting locations.
And, we already know if Republicans lose the mid-terms, it will be to the lack of passage of the SAVE ACT. Not that Trump, with Congressional Republican consent, continued the Iran war that should have been stopped after two weeks with the basic mission accomplished, prices soaring, and people just sick and tired of spending money on grandstanding and unwanted projects- White Ballroom, Arc de Triomphe, not to mention the racist and sexism of his administration.
Meanwhile, the unending Iran war has cost us to date $113 Billion. DHS is spending $70 billion for ICE (figure out what that works out for each illegal immigrant evicted). Etc. etc. Meanwhile, utilities are soaring, insurance is soaring, rents and housing prices have climbed, cars are unaffordable with the average prices over $49,000.
On this day, the 4th of July, it is heartwarming to view that some of our basic democratic rights- voting-are being upheld.
